Lamplight by My Native Tongue

Favorite Track: Multa

My Native Tongue are an alternative band from Simi Valley, California. 6 pm is a really good introductory track and already made me excited to hear what the rest of the EP would sound like. The lead single Traffic is a more energetic and upbeat track. I actually had the opportunity to hear this song live when I saw the band last month and they showed all the energy in this track when they played it. Multa is definitely one of my favorites lyrically. The first line “I am flawed, and I have been since the start” got my attention immediately and made me want to hear the rest of the song. I love how in this track in particular, the band portrays the emotion in the song very well. That’s not to say they don't do that with the other tracks on here as well, because that's not the case. In this track specifically, I feel like the emotion in this song is shown a bit more prominently, and I think that the meaningful and relatable lyrics make it show even more.

Faux For Saffron seems to have a darker tone to it, but that's something that makes it stand out so much. It also ties with Multa for being my favorite track lyrically. Modest seems to contrast with Faux For Saffron and sounds a bit lighter and happier. My favorite part of the song is actually the pre chorus and the way it transitions into the chorus, which is a bit darker than the rest of the song. Musically it seems complex but it all goes together very well and still sounds good. Bell is another happier and more energetic track that made me want to bop my head to the beat or move or dance in some way. It's honestly a really catchy track. While it sounds happy, some of the lyrics are a bit darker. The contrast is something I like in not just this song, but a lot of music I listen to in general. This band did a great job with that contrast in this song.

The closing track Easy Bake Oven is definitely my favorite song as far as instrumentation goes. I really love the guitar part (and I'm not just saying that because I play guitar as well). The song is a pretty good way to close out the EP. I think that Lamplight is definitely an improvement from this band’s debut EP, Plane Kids. I think that this band has a lot of potential and Lamplight shows that even more. I see this going places in the future, especially now that they have this EP under their belt.

This is an EP I do see myself coming back to from time to time for repeated listens and honestly I think it's one of my favorite EPs that has been released this year so far.
