Twenty One Pilots The Icy Tour comes to an end in Seattle, WA

Twenty One Pilots - September 25th, 2022 - Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle, WA

Alternative Rock Duo Twenty One Pilots recently spent this past summer making it snow inside arenas in 23 North America cities on their headlining Icy Tour in support of their 6th studio album Scaled & Icy. We caught the final show of the tour in Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena and so did many of Twenty One Pilots die hard fans, many of whom traveled by air and then camped out to witness the spectacular tour one last time.

Opening the show was young singer songwriter Peter McPoland who provided direct support for the entire tour and electrified the crowd every night. The 21 year old bounced all over the stage putting all of his energy into his short performance especially during his songs like “Shit Show” and “Romeo & Juliet'' which fans happily danced along to.

Soon after was Twenty One Pilots’ time to shine and as the lights dimmed and the duo walked out on stage together in their Icy attire the crowd turned into an emotional frenzy of fans who were both excited to see the show for the first time and bummed that the tour was coming to an end.

Singer Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun, have always been able to create tours that are memorable for everyone in the crowd and somehow they always manage to one up themselves with each tour they do. The Icy tour was filled with some of their best stage production yet, some of the most memorable being when they made it snow multiple times throughout the show or when a campfire was built for the two to jam out some slower songs alongside their touring band who have been touring with them on this album cycle.

Another favorite moment of mine during the show was actually something not organized by the band at all but by their fans. A group of 30 or so fans handed out and placed over 15,000 colored pieces of paper in every section of the venue dividing the crowd into 4 different sections. Towards the end of the band’s song Mulberry Street, Joseph orchestrated each of these sections to hold up their phone lights during specific words in the song. When this happened each section of the crowd lit up in Scaled & Icy album colors (blue, pink, and yellow).

Throughout the band's 25 song setlist, Tyler Joseph ran the most I had ever seen him. He performed in multiple places within the crowd including a second stage in the back of the crowd (B Stage)  as well as on a raised tower that he climbed and in the lower levels of the crowd. To give you an idea of how much Joseph ran, during “Ride” he went from the main stage to the lower right side of the area then ran directly over to the lower left side of the arena then ran back to the B stage to play a little bit of piano before literally taking a ride on a mattress that he belly flopped onto and crowd surfed back to the main stage on. On the other hand, I felt as if Josh Dun was distanced from fans not in the front of the crowd compared to previous tours but I don’t blame him, it’s not easy to move around a huge arena when you’re drumming as intensely as he does on stage. Fans still got to witness Dun’s iconic backflip during Holding Onto You and of course he did his drum solo on top of the crowd on his drum island during a mashup of their songs “My Blood” and “Saturday”. Later on in the show Joseph decided the day Dun is no longer able to do the backflip is when they’ll start adding seats to the floor (fans jokingly started to boo them for that comment).

The show ended as Twenty One Pilots' shows have always ended - with a performance of their song Trees after a short speech from Tyler, this tour they dedicated part of the speech to highlight their crew members then about half way through the song the duo climb on top of fans in front of the crowd to do a drum duel while confetti fills the venue with the colors of Icy & Scaled and in the shape of the band’s mascot Ned. The nostalgic ending is always satisfying to witness no matter how many times fans have seen the band perform it’s no surprise why fans love following this band on tour so much.

We can’t wait to see what Twenty One Pilots have up their sleeve for their next album, some fans seemed to notice slight changes in the visuals at the Seattle show and the band loves being sneaky and leaving little hints for fans to decode when they release new albums so make sure to keep an eye out!
