Polyphia in Seattle, WA

Polyphia - August 24th, 2022 - The Neptune, Seattle, WA

Polyphia, the genre defying instrumental band hailing from Plano, TX, made a long awaited return to Seattle, WA, on their sold-out summer headliner. Along for the ride, they brought with them math rock band Unprocessed all the way from Germany, for a night full of noodly riffs, mosh pits, and a wall of death.

Unprocessed hit the stage first, playing mostly a mix of songs from their new album that was dropped in the middle of this tour, Gold, a very excited crowd was receptive to the German band almost right away, with the band commanding the stage expertly, getting the crowd moving, crowd surfing and singing along. They are a band that is very much worth checking out next time they come through your city, mixing pop and math rock flawlessly.

As their set came to a close, anticipation was buzzing for Polyphia to have their turn with the crowd that had sold out this show to see them absolutely shred, and shred they did. They started off their set playing an unreleased song off their recently announced new album, Remember that you Will Die, due to be out October 28th, titled Genesis, quickly moving into another new one and the second single of this album, Neurotica. Polyphia is a band that doesn’t need to do much to get a crowd going, as the audience is very receptive to all the hit, moving into the ever popular O.D. of their last album, New Levels, New Devils, with the crowd absolutely losing their mind as the iconic intro to this song started, to the point that I had to restrain myself from not just putting my camera down and head banging along.

After these first three songs, the boys took us back to their breakthrough EP, The Worst, playing Goose, 40 oz. and Icronic back to back, it was at this moment that the mosh pits really started to get going. Leading the crowd into a sing along before moving into Champagne, which a member of the audience had already started to sing out loud before guitarist, Scott LePage, could even get the notes out of his mouth for the rest of the crowd, which only hyped both the crowd and the band up even more. Following Champagne, they moved into their last single before the start of this album cycle, Look but Don’t Touch. Nightmare, Drown, Crosty and The Worst followed suit. Finally we reached the song that I personally was most excited about, the flamenco inspired, Playing God, the first single of this current album cycle and one of the most fun songs that I had the pleasure of seeing live, it became clear that this song as well as their two others from this album that this was Polyphia doing what they did best, mixing genres you would never expect and putting their signature spin to it with fun catchy riffs and bouncy trap beats.

The crowd demanded an encore, and the band obliged, asking for a wall of death before they jumped into G.O.A.T, dividing the room in half before the crowd devolved into utter pandemonium, finishing off on a high note with Euphoria off of Renaissance.

Polyphia is a unique and special band, and this is not an exaggeration when I say that they are quite literally one of the best bands out there. They are such a pleasure to see live and I never get tired of listening to them. If Polyphia is ever in your town, do yourself a favour, and go and see the self proclaimed, best Christian rock metal band in the world.
