Pierce The Veil and The Used stop in Atlanta with Don Broco and deathbyromy
What do you get when you combine two bands with over 15 years of experience with two of the best and newest acts? That would be the Creative Control Tour: Pierce The Veil and The Used made a stop in Atlanta on Tuesday, May 30th, and brought along Don Broco and deathbyromy to the Coca-Cola Roxy.
After two amazing sets from deathbyromy and Don Broco, a white sheet with The Used’s logo covered the stage as fans anxiously waited. Eventually the silhouettes of the band could be seen and the beginning of their first song, “Take It Away,” started before dropping and revealing a stage covered with different colored roses.
The band had a 13-song setlist that combined a mixture of old and new songs from the band's discography spanning over 20 years. From staples like “The Taste Of Ink” and “All That I’ve Got,” to newer songs like “Giving Up” and “Fuck You” (a personal favorite), the band never fail to get a crowd singing and jumping along with them.
As they made their way through songs like “A Box Full of Sharp Objects,” “The Bird and the Worm,” “I Caught Fire,” and “Buried Myself Alive,” the energy never stopped. Fans sang along and never stopped dancing while the band did what they did best and gave their all.
After ending their set with “Pretty Handsome Awkward” from 2007’s Lies for the Liars, the crowd bid farewell and the anticipation for Pierce The Veil began.
Everyone stood in anticipation as the white sheet covered the stage. As soon as the sounds of “El Rey” by Vincente Fernandez filled the room cheers erupted, some fans singing along while others screamed in pure excitement. Shortly after, the song transitioned into the band’s first song on the setlist, “Death Of An Executioner,” as the logo from their last album bounced around the sheet before dropping and revealing the band, and confetti cannons shot pink confetti into the crowd.
As the second song, “Bulls In The Bronx,” started, fans began to crowd surf their way to the front and sang along with lead singer Vic Fuentes. The band made their way through a 10-song setlist that was mixed with songs from their last 4 albums. One of my personal favorites on the setlist was “Southern Constellations” / “The Boy Who Could Fly” from 2010’s Selfish Machines. For fans who have been around for a long time, it’s nice to see the band still show love for older songs, while newer fans enjoyed being able to hear songs they may have never thought they’d hear live.
The band also played a song from 2016’s Misadventures (“Circles”) along with a few more from their latest record, 2023’s The Jaws Of Life (“Pass The Nirvana” and “Emergency Contact”). One of my favorite moments from the show was during “Hold On Till May,” which has become a crowd favorite over the years, when Vic invited a fan on stage who was holding a sign that read, “I held on till may and through cancer.” It was truly a beautiful moment as the crowd and Vic sang to the fan and eventually gave his guitar to the fan.
The night ended with “Caraphernelia” and crowd favorite “King For A Day,” as everyone left with smiles on their faces.
