Neck Deep bring pop-punk and hardcore to Royal Oak, Michigan
The acclaimed pop-punk band Neck Deep have been touring a long way from their homes back in the United Kingdom, performing in cities all across North America this winter along with support from Drain, Bearings, and Higher Power.
We caught the tour at their stop in Michigan at the packed Royal Oak Music Theatre. The night started off with music from Higher Power, a hardcore band who had traveled from the UK as well - as the opening band, they did their job and filled the room with energy. Next to take the stage was Bearings, a Canadian pop-punk band who had the crowd moshing nonstop throughout their set. The last of the openers to perform was Drain, a hardcore band from California. Drain’s performance brought the energy in the room to a whole new level with their chaotic performance.
Miraculously, by the time Neck Deep took the stage the crowd wasn’t drained of all their energy. In the past 3 years Neck Deep have released a bunch of new music - the band’s most recent recordings came out in January, a self-titled studio album. This album marks the group’s 5th studio release since they began over a decade ago in 2012. The Welsh band opened their show with their fast paced and popular new song “Dumbstruck Dumbf**k.” They didn’t only stick with performing their latest music during their 19-song setlist, which included crowd favorites like “Kali Ma” which started the crowd surfing for their set. The pop-punk band kept the energy flowing for the rest of their performance as they played older crowd favorites like “Motion Sickness” and “Lowlife.” The band showed no signs of slowing down as they ran across the stage and swapped spots with one another, all while kicking and jumping around. This was all mirrored by the crowd, who continued to crowd surf even in between songs. The night ended with a 3 song encore, closing it out with “In Bloom,” which seemed to be a fan favorite based on the display the crowd put on.
The tour will be wrapping up in Chicago later this month, but the band already has plans to return back to North America later this year for the When We Were Young music festival.
