100 Gecs in Seattle, WA

Hyperpop mainstays, 100 gecs, brought their first ever headlining tour to Seattle, WA. With support from hyperrap artist Aaron Cartier, Best Rapper and, for Seattle only, experimental electronic artist beanboy, the sold out crowd in Seattle was in for a night full of face melting over distorted bass drops & guitar riffs.

First up was bean boy, unfortunately due to the line being pretty long, and moving at a slow pace due to security checking everyone’s vaccine cards, as well as what one member of the audience described as “everyone getting their own personal pat down” due to the amount of metal that some people had on their outfits, I wasn’t able to catch much of his set. From what I did catch though, I could tell the the Seattle based artist was ready to throw down some heavy baselines, and the crowd was more than receptive to what he played, Definitely an artist to keep an eye on if you’re a fan of the genre.

Next up was Aaron Cartier, Best Rapper. The rapper who I would describe as hyperrap. Right off the bat he made sure to get the crowd as hyped up as possible, starting with the opening track from his album Smile Season, Fastlane. An energetic set, with Cartier going all over the stage, he may have been alone up on the stage but the energy he gave off was well received by the crowd.

Finally the hour came for 100 gecs to hit the stage, the duo, consisting of Laura Les & Dylan Brady, have had a really quick rise to fame, with their well received debut 1000 gecs, a tour supporting boyband Brockhampton and now their first full headlining tour across the US, the show was a mix of songs off the aforementioned album and a very nice mix of upcoming album 10000 gecs, due in 2022. If I could speak on a personal note, seeing gecs was one of my top priorities after listening to their first album over the pandemic and not understanding why something so chaotic was so damn catchy.

To say they exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. The show was the exact amount of weird and anarchic that I expected it would be and more. Jumping right off the bat with a new song from their upcoming sophomore album, Les & Brady came out wearing wizard robes and hats to a crowd who was more than excited to see them. After the opening song, and a quick introduction, they jumped straight into one of their most popular tracks, the electronic ska heavy Stupid Horse.

After another new track Les told the crowd that, that day, was her 4 year wedding anniversary with her husband, which was a very touching fact to share, telling him that she loved him, she dedicated the next song, Ringtone, to him as she had written it about him.

A few more unreleased tracks and a cloth with some metal pieces was brought out and the duo were given some mallets and began playing music with those metal pieces. Afterwards some acoustic guitars were brought out and an acoustic rendition of gecgecgec was preformed, followed by the ever popular hand crushed by a mallet, which included the ending from their remix album 1000 gecs and the tree of clues, which featured Fall Out Boy, Nicole Dollanganger & Craig Owens. During this song I saw some insane mosh pits break out.

My favourite track of the night was a nu-metal inspired track that surprised me, it hit super heavy and showed their continued use of all of their influences. It is a track that I am very much looking forward to streaming non-stop upon the release of 10000 gecs.

After this previously unreleased song, Les informed the crowd that they were going to preform a cover of a Brockhampton song, and ended up trolling the crowd and jumped into their most popular track to date, Money Machine. The crowd demanded an encore after this song, and pair obliged, performing one more new track and finally 800db cloud.

100 gecs has done an amazing job of translating the strange world that they have created with their music into a live setting. They have proved that as the heads of the current hyperpop culture they are a force to be reckoned with both off stage as well as on stage. The crowd was one of the most energetic and receptive, while still being respectful to each other, that I’ve ever seen. The mosh pits rivaled some of the ones I have seen at metal shows. I am so excited to see where they go from here as this is clearly only the beginning. If you have the chance to see them on this tour, I absolutely recommend.
